The environment of the skin determines the zones that skin microorganisms prefer to colonise. There are dry, oily and moist skin zones on the human body. The proliferation of anaerobic microorganisms, such as C. acnes is promoted in areas that are sealed off from the air (such as blocked pores). Corynebacteria thrive in moist conditions. Yeasts settle on scalp and greasy areas.

The skin's microbial landscape is an important part of the human body. The skin serves as breeding ground for its microbiota which metabolises targeted nutrients supplied by the skin to ensure the equilibrium. However, if the microbial diversity is in balance, it serves as a defence against intruders, e.g. by production of defensins.

Internal and external factors alike, including stress, lifestyle UV, the climate, environment and very dry or sensitive skin, can all upset the balance of the skin microbiota, e.g. by activating the inflammasome and letting ‘bad’ bacteria inhabit the space created. Cosmetic active ingredients can help to rebalance disturbances in the skin microbiota.
